SHIVA - Stratospheric Ozone: Halogen Impacts in a Varying Atmosphere

The Norwegian Institute for Air Research, Norway (NILU)

NILU is an independent research foundation specializing in air pollution research from global to local problems and today is one of the largest European institutes in this field. NILU is the Chemical Coordinating Centre for EMEP and coordinates the work under the Convention on Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution on particulate matter. NILU is a member of the European Environment Agency’s Topic Centre on Air Quality and Climate Change. NILU has 30 years experience in ambient trace gas measurements. NILU has been involved in several recent or current EC-research projects relevant to the SHIVA proposal, such as EUCAARI, EUSAAR, EARLINET-ASOS, RETRO, SCOUT-O3, MEGAPOLI and ACCENT. NILU is also a member of the Nordic Centre of Excellence CBACCI (Biosphere – Atmosphere - Clouds – Climate – Interactions).

Tasks within SHIVA:

  • NILU will provide forecasts of tracer transport for the airborne measurement campaign, and by providing backward modelling products from all SHIVA in-situ measurements (airborne, ship-borne, etc.) (WP-4).
  • The Lagrangian particle dispersion model FLEXPART will be used for the forecasts and the analyses.
  • Forecasts and analyses will be made available to the SHIVA partners through the use of publicly available internet web-pages.
